Lake County Music Guide – 7.27.21

I was made privy to a little-known fact today; the origin of Mojo Larry’s uber-cool nickname. Apparently, before he became a world-famous guitarist he once owned a chain of Italian Pizza Parlors that went by his real name, Moe Gioleri’s Pizza. When he sold his business to a restaurant entrepreneur named Ernie Domino and hence became a highly talented guitar player, the transition to this new moniker was a no-brainer – and he just couldn’t help it!… Okay, none of this is true, but it seemed like a fun and silly way to start this week’s live music guide. I hope everybody, especially Larry, will forgive me for the ruse… Here’ the live music guide for the week of 7/27 through 8/3…

The Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market is happening today at Library Park in Lakeport from 10 to 1:00. Come on out and welcome new performer Gospel/R&B singer Gloria Scott. While you’re at it, stock up on locally grown fruit and vegetables plus an assortment of hand-crafted items, food products, oils, and jewelry. Something for just about everybody.

Tuesday afternoon is “Buskin’ for Brewskis” day at Kelsey Creek Brewing in K’ville from 3 to 6:00. Danny Prather and me, Mike Guarniero, play acoustics, sing songs and invite special guests to join us. We don’t really only play for beer, but it sounds fun so we’re gonna keep the name. Come on down if you can and hoist a glass with us. What fun!…

Speaking of hoisting a glass, the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake is hosting a “Distillers Dinner” on Wednesday from 6 to 8:00. “Chef Pablo Aguilar has created a special menu to pair well with the outstanding spirits created by master distiller CRISPIN CAIN at the Tamar Distillery in Redwood Valley”. Music will be performed by a famous musician, Paul Kemp – love this guy! The cost is $90. Please call the BWS for more info.

The Hopland Tap in Hopland is continuing its Pro Jam Blues Invitational with Wendy DeWitt this Wednesday from 7 to 10. Wendy and house band guys– Pierre Archain, Kirk Harwood and Skip Engle usually welcome a name-brand Bay Area musician for these jams. Could be someone you know…

On Thursday at the Saw Shop Public House in Kelseyville, get ready for the excellent Blues music of Dave Broida and Blues Farm. The food is good, the bar is full and the 1,4,5 of DB&BF is incomparable. Music is from 6 to 8:00, outside on the curb, Amigos…

The Lakeport Concert Series at Library Park will feature the Rockabilly mayhem of Spinout, featuring guitarist Jinx Jones. Love that gritty, old-timey Rock ‘n’ Roll. I’ll be there. You should, too. Lakeport rocks from 6:30 to 8:30. Be there or be square, Dudes!

Friday evening is when The Park starts Rockin’ with Tommy Rox – Richmond Park, that is, in the bayside Riviera. T.Rox plays Friday from 6:30 to 9:30, then Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5:00. Boat slips are still above water, just in case you’re out on the lake.

On Saturday morning expect William Vanderwall to be the musical performer at the Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market, still at the Floriculture Building in the Lake County Fairgrounds from 10 AM to 1:00. As you stock up on locally grown fruit and Vegetables, be aware that there are many hand-crafted items for sale throughout the market – stuff you can’t live without – really!

Dr. Groove, (my band), will be rockin’ The Riv on Saturday from 5 to 9:00. I’m talking the Riviera Hills Lounge in the Riviera, outside on the patio. Take in the great views while Dr. Groove lays out the great Blues, Rock and R&B. Always a fun time!

The Spot in Clearlake is happy to present The Time Travelers from 6 to 9 on Saturday evening. This band is slowly making a name for themselves – go check ‘em out!

O’Meara Bros Brewing in Lakeport will feature the music of Jay Bird on Saturday evening from 6 to 9:00. Come for a meal, excellent handcrafted beers and ales – get some good music. It’s all good!

The Adams Springs Golf Course Clubhouse in the Cobb area will feature the eclectic Blues stylings of Stevie and the Shufflenuts from 6 to 10 on Saturday. For their Sunday Brunch come enjoy an excellent meal while listening to the music of Jacob Weldon from 11:30 AM to 2:00.

It’s Bluegrass at the Ely Stage Stop on Soda Bay Rd once again this Sunday from noon ‘til 2:00 when the Fiddlers Jam takes over the stage. Take care of your Clogging fix when this energetic music is playing. A little bit of Lake County history can be easily discovered at the ESS Museum while you’re there.

The Boathouse Restaurant in that nice little town of Nice will feature the music of Howard Dockens from 3 to 7:00.

As always, there’s lots going on at the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake this weekend; Friday evening come enjoy the delightful Blues Standards, Torch Ballads, and other popular songs from many years past as performed by The Majide Trio from 6 to 8:00. On Saturday The RJP2 Duo, (a fraction of the Rural Jazz Project, Tom Aiken, and Steve Baird), from 6 to 8:00. Sunday Brunch will feature Ft Bragg guitarist and vocalist Aaron Ford from 11:30 to 2:00. Sunday Supper Majide presents guest Jazz Flautist George Husaruk from 6 to 8:00. Monday Blues brings you The Lucky Losers, award-winning Bay Area band, the LUCKY LOSERS, featuring KATHY LEMONS, on vocals and PHIL BERKOWITZ on blues harp. Always a good idea to make reservations for any and all these events.

The Music Club at the Finley Big Valley Grange Hall will present on Tuesday, 8/3, TC Culp and friends from 6 to 8:00. This venue is especially casual, with pot luck, BYOB, and good vibes. Along with TC, sax player extraordinaire Sunny Cordell will be blowing throughout, but expect maybe a trumpet player and other good friends as well. Great fun stuff!

On a more sad note, I read last week in The Bloom, that local author Gene Paleno has passed away. For those unfamiliar with Mr. Paleno, he authored two books; “Lake County History – a Mystical Adventure in Time” and later, “The Porter Conspiracy”, a story of the Civil War. Over the last several years he has been a regular guest speaker on Lake County Public Radio, KPFZ, a columnist for The Bloom, and a storyteller of renown. I have read his book about Lake County with deep reverence, enjoyed his columns on The Bloom, and even had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times as he delivered his books to both the Upper Lake Mercantile and Six Sigma Ranch and Winery. Even into his nineties he never shied away from telling an anecdote or two. I wished I had gotten to know him better. R.I.P., Amigo.

That’s it for this week. If you happen to get out for one or more of our local live music events, have fun, stay hydrated, be safe…

Mike Guarniero

Mike has been playing professionally, both acoustic and electric, for 40+ years. He paid his dues in a robust Sonoma County music scene during the '80s and '90s, then DJ'd for 10 years after moving to Lake County in 1996. After retiring from his job of 26 years, because he recognized a growing local music scene, he decided to devote his time to playing live music again. He's never looked back. Along with his regular band, Dr. Groove, he has filled in on lead guitar for local bands, (Fargo Bros, Blues Farm, C.A.M. Band, Borrowed Time, Time Travelers). He's played acoustic guitar at a some of our local wineries, restaurants, farmers Markets and art galleries. He's also a semi-regular supporting various local Open Mics around Lake County. He writes and records original songs and has recorded original demos for other performers as well. For the last three years, he has posted on Facebook a local music guide called the Lake County Music Guide.
