Lake County Music Guide – 11.18.21

I’m sitting here listening to the music of the Fingerprintz album, “Distinguishing Marks”, one of my favorites from the late ‘70s. Most of you have never heard of these Scots, a “New Wave” band that used an amalgam of irony, dark subjects and wordplay along with music that was beat driven, echoey and loud, (CAN I GET AN AMEN!) – but they were a big influence in my songwriting for many years. Today they provide the perfect backdrop for writing the live music guide for the week of 11/18 through 11/22…

On Friday evening The Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville will present the music of Big Kiss Whiskey. These guys are fun, playing Ol’ Timey Country & Western, plus Pop tunes from the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. Who doesn’t love these guys? Who doesn’t love a big kiss? Who doesn’t love whiskey? It’s the perfect tri-fecta! So, if you’re out rollin’ along with the tumblin’ tumbleweeds, go check ‘em out between 6:30 and 9:30…

Rivino Winery in Ukiah will present the music of Twining Time on Friday from 4 to 7:00.On Saturday, The RW will present Mendo Nights starting at 1:00. CAM alumni and everybody’s amigo, John Gormely, will be performing with Jonathan Jimmerson on Friday at Twin Pine Casino in Middletown from 9 to 1:30. Jonathan Jimmerson will also be playing Saturday, sans Gormley. Jimmerson is a multi-talented musician who plays guitar, piano, bass, mandolin, banjo, steel guitar, drums and ukulele, (not all at the same time, Mojo…). John, of course, plays bass and adds a special shine to the room… Should be fun.

Robinson Rancheria Lounge in Nice will bring you some soul when Patton Letha plays Friday from 5 to 9:00. Check out his vids, then check him out… It’s ‘80s and ‘90s time at the Lounge on Saturday when Thunder Cover takes the stage from 9 to 1:00.

On Saturday morning the Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market at Steele Winery in the Finley area, there’s still plenty of locally grown fruit and vegetables available along with an assortment of interesting, handcrafted items you won’t want to leave without. Playing music between 10AM and 1:00 will be Randy Hood, who has been joining me recently at Buskin’ for Brewskis and, let me tell you – this guy is DAMN GOOD! Check it all out!

O’Meara Bros Brewing in Lakeport on Saturday from 6 to 9:00 will feature, along with a great menu and excellent handcrafted beers and ales, the music of Shawn and Jonah San Nicolas. If this is who I think it is, you’re really gonna enjoy their lively music.

My band, Dr. Groove, will be Rockin’ the Riv on Saturday from 7 to 11:00. That’s the Riviera Hills Lounge, for those who need to know… Come early for a meal, check out the impressive twilight skies and scenery, then dance the night away to some fun R&B, Blues, Soul, Funk and Rock. It’s all good! Reservations are recommended…

There’s Metal on Saturday at the Ukiah Brewing Co from 10 to 1:00 featuring Exhumed, Creeping Death and Bewitched. Cost is $20, ($15 in advance). Did you know that the “sign of the Devil” hand gesture popular among the Metal folks is also the sign language gesture for “Love”? Kinda makes you think…

The Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake always provides a full plate of entertainment throughout the weekend. On Friday evening the ever-delightful Majide Trio will be offering up some Torch Ballads, Blues Standards, and other songs from a wonderful by-gone era of music, all between 6 and 8:00.On Saturday evening the lovely and talented Hillarie Wilt will be a strummin’ and a singin’ for your dining pleasures from 6 to 8:00.

Sunday Brunch will bring an excellent menu, and the even more excellent music of singer, pianist and raconteur, Andy Rossoff, from 11:30AM to 2:00.

For the Sunday Supper enjoy an excellent meal while the awe inspiring classical and popular pianist Carolyn Hawley tickles the ivories and tantalizes the audience from 6 to 8:00.The Monday Blues Series will feature my friends and yours, Stevie and the Shufflenutz from 6 to 9:00. Cash in on some of the best Blues you’re ever gonna hear in The LC when these guys do their 1,4,5 thing. Take it from the top, Boys! Reservations are strongly recommended for any and all of these shows.

There’s an old, paraphrased saying; “One who expects nothing is seldom disappointed”. There’s something fun in this oxymoron, because, as negative as it appears, it’s actually positive, (is that redundant?). Perhaps it’s a stretch, but as the music scene dwindles down towards minimal in the upcoming Winter, maybe what actually does happen, relatively speaking, turns out to be the best we’re going to experience. Am I out to lunch or what?!? Stay tuned, Amigos… So if and when you go out this week to support our local live music, have a fun time – but please be careful…

Mike Guarniero
