1 Team 1 Dream
Out of the ashes comes goodness and innovation. Two continually active and involved ladies have developed an idea/concept that they have brought into fruition called ‘1 Team 1 Dream’. This effort will help to transform some of our Lake County entrepreneurs beginning in December 2020. Maryann Schmid, Founder, and Olga Martin Steele, co-Founder, initiated this effort in September 2018. Olga is the President of the non-profit Board of Directors while Maryann is the Vice President of the Board.
Through their efforts, a program to encourage and support local entrepreneurs is taking shape known as “Hands Up Lake County.” This is a first of its kind program for Lake County, a competition to open doors for budding entrepreneurs and small businesses in the County. The application deadline is July 31, 2020. Applications and complete information can be found at www.1team1dream.net/
From the applications received, a group of 10-15 will be selected to participate in a 1-day business planning training to be held at the Lodge at Blue Lakes. Local instructors Denise Rushing and Carol Cole-Lewis will take participants through the basics of business plan development, financials, marketing, and case histories. All participants will receive a workbook complete with templates and reference materials.
The first competition will result in five finalists who will go on to pitch their ideas before a panel of business leaders and the audience in attendance at the final Gala and competition on December 6, 2020, at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport.
The final contestants will have access to one-on-one professional training and mentoring to present their best possible pitch for a chance to win a cash award of $10,000, $5000, $3000, %1500 or $1000. Other prizes shall be awarded as well.
Sponsorships of several levels are being sought, from $100 to $5000 plus. By joining 1 Team 1 Dream as a sponsor, you will be acknowledged as an advocate for entrepreneurship in Lake County. Stepping up to move this program forward, Peter and Maryann Schmid, owners of the Lodge at Blue Lakes will match cash donations up to a total of $10,000!
For those small businesses which are working so hard to survive all they have suffered through these past several years, this could be the light at the end of the tunnel.
As an advocate for business in Lake County since 1990, I see this as an opportunity for many, even those who do not achieve a final monetary award. Many resources for assisting our struggling businesses will be revealed through this process. The 15 chosen for that one-day training will continue to learn and grow their knowledge of the paths to follow to success. It seems that old adages still ring true – nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Remember the deadline to apply is July 31, 2020, make your dream of business success a reality – just keep moving forward. Also, keep in mind the death of a business can be the term ‘sole proprietor’, do not ever try to depend upon only yourself as a business is made up of 4 legs: product, marketing, finance and technology. It is very seldom that one person can be the master of all four to see them through to success. Don’t be afraid of seeking counsel from others who have the knowledge/expertise you don’t have. You will learn and improve your skill sets. 1 Team 1 Dream is a perfect example of bringing your 1 Dream to fruition through resources you may not even realize you need.
