On Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks sits an unassuming white building with red trim. It’s the home to Betty’s Tacos.
Betty’s tacos has a menu full of great items from oversized tortas to burritos, sopes, and salads. But, if you’re going there, you’ll have to try the tacos. Each four inch corn tortilla is filled with flavor; the beef is seasoned and tender, chopped fine, but not too small. Topped with tidbits of lettuce, cilantro, radish, grilled onion, a squeeze of lime, and the salsa of your choice, it’s bright, juicy, and tangy.
And at Betty’s Tacos, spicy salsa is spicy. It’s always disappointing to find a “hot” salsa that tastes like tomato paste. But Betty’s adds heat wholeheartedly, and the flavor comes through. On top of that, each sauce, form pico de gallo to guacamole to enchilada is unique and tasty. Take some time to try them all.
Betty’s also makes impressive tamales. Tamales will always taste different depending on who made them, and Betty’s goes the extra mile to make them well. They’re big; eight or nine inches long, soaking in a red sauce and covered with cheese. Many tamales get dry and pasty, but not Betty’s. They’re creamy and rich in flavor. Some tamales seem to have no filling; Betty’s are stuffed with your choice of chicken, pork, or green chile and cheese, a personal favorite. The chicken tamale has soft chunks of potatoes, giving it a unique texture and flavor that beg to be eaten. The tamales have all the flavor of home cooking; they taste just like dinner at your abuela’s.
Betty’s currently is offering takeout, but it does have outside dining available out back. Head to the Oaks, pick something new each time, just to see, and look forward to some good food.
